The Lawyer — Most Innovative Technology Initiative

Simonsen Vogt Wiig (SVW) is one of the largest law firms in Norway, where innovation is of the utmost importance — demonstrated by their win for the 'Most Innovative Technology Initiative' award from The Lawyer for a solution built in Neota's no-code platform.

Chief Digital Officer Peter van Dam identified the value no-code development could bring to the wider community during the pandemic, as well as building cutting-edge solutions to ensure clients receive the best possible service.

The challenge

As COVID-19 rapidly affected all businesses, owners across the globe were struck with a tsunami of ever-changing information about what governmental financial support was available, and whether they'd be eligible.

This was no lesser the case in Norway. While the information was comprehensive, the difficulty lay in finding what was relevant to one's business and what requirements applied. Coupled with the anxieties lockdown brought, trawling through information spread across government websites was no simple task.

The solution

This is where Thom Erik Borgen (partner) and Kasper Formo Asplin (senior lawyer) found they could help. With so many businesses in desperate need of this knowledge, scaling SVW's expertise to the masses would have been difficult in any classical manner — and the forms of support were constantly changing, so any static tool would have become redundant in days.

With the help of legal technology consultants Transform Data, SVW released a free, user-friendly web tool built in under three weeks in the Neota platform. After a few simple questions about their business and circumstances, users were presented only the relevant information — easing the anxieties of many who had no legal knowhow about where to find what mattered to them.

Why Neota?

The Lawyer's award jury noted the tool's flexibility — something that makes the Neota platform so valuable. Relaying changing guidance at scale usually means relying on developers; Neota eliminates that step while maintaining the balance between scaling expertise and a user-friendly experience. As requirements changed, SVW could rapidly update the app themselves, with no knowledge of code.

The end result for the user was much the same as consulting a legal advisor — but free, available any time, and answered in minutes. SVW's lawyers were then able to spend their time on less procedural matters where their expertise has greater value.

The future

SVW has already built a multitude of tools in the Neota platform with Transform Data, including a Dawn-Raid Guide, a GDPR compliance tool, merger filing and a procurement solution.

A current project is a competition-law compliance solution for a major client that only shows questions relevant to what's been entered. SVW intends to offer it as a product to all its clients — the flexibility of Neota lets them scale and add features rather than build new solutions from scratch for each industry.

“With Neota, established and verified changes in requirements could be reflected in the app in a matter of minutes — keeping the most up-to-date information in front of the people who needed it.”
