Neota Logic backs student-built legal guidance tools at the 2026 UTS Law Tech Challenge for Social Justice

At the Grand Final on August 17, four teams of UTS law students presented legal guidance tools they created on the Neota Logic no-code software development toolset to help low-income people across Australia, each in partnership with a non-profit. The team behind Data Demander, an app that lets users compel dating apps to hand over the personal data held on them, took top honors.

The 2026 Wotton Kearney Neota UTS Law Tech Challenge for Social Justice came to a close at its Grand Final on August 17. Over a five-month development period beginning in February, four teams of UTS law students from the Brennan Justice and Leadership program worked alongside lawyers from Wotton Kearney, who served as mentors, and partnered with four non-profits to design and build high-impact tools on the Neota Logic no-code software development toolset. The challenge runs each year on a model first developed in the US by Georgetown Law and Neota Logic, and has blended law and technology for the greater good since 2016.

Each team spent the program scoping a real access-to-justice problem with its partner organization and creating a tool the organization can put into practice.

Legal Readiness Companion, created for Dementia Australia, helps people affected by dementia assess a person's readiness to prepare a will, an enduring power of attorney, and an advance care directive. It guides individuals and families through those decisions at a difficult and often time-sensitive moment, so families can act while the choices are still theirs to make.

Complaint Letter-Writer, created for Super Consumers Australia, helps Australian super fund members quickly craft a detailed complaint letter to their fund, tailored to the member's particular circumstances. It lowers the barrier to challenging a fund that has not done right by its members.

RepairMate, created for Canberra Community Law, provides first-tier guidance, document generation, and automated follow-up to tenants of Housing ACT who are struggling with one or more repair issues in their home. Tenants set out any number of urgent and non-urgent problems, which draw on the rules and guidance that Canberra Community Law's staff have defined, and the app follows up once a landlord's deadline has passed with tailored next steps at the moment a tenant is most likely to be stuck.

Data Demander, created for Digital Rights Watch, makes it easy for users to write and submit an effective data-demand letter to any dating app, such as Tinder, legally requiring the app to hand over the large amount of personal data it holds on the user. It turns a right most people never exercise into a few guided steps.

The team behind Data Demander took top honors at the Grand Final, recognized for a tool that gives users a practical way to exercise a data-access right that often goes unused.

The UTS Law Tech Challenge for Social Justice sits at the heart of Neota Logic's mission to advance social justice by helping law students use technology for good.
